Cookie policy

This is a short page because this is a small site. One advertising tool can set cookies here, it is off until you accept, and nothing on the site stops working if you never do.

1What runs before you decide

Until you accept, no cookie is set on this sitefor advertising or analytics. We use Google's Consent Mode, which means Google's advertising tag loads in a restricted state where it cannot write to or read from your device: it stores nothing, and sends no advertising identifier. If you decline, it stays that way for the rest of your visit and every visit after it.

Being straight about the part that is easy to gloss over: the tag itself is still downloaded from Google, and in that restricted state it sends Google a cookieless ping. That ping carries your IP address, your browser's user-agent string and the page you are on, and Google uses it to estimate — not to identify — how many people arrived from an ad. It does not contain a cookie, an advertising ID or anything you typed. If you would rather it did not happen at all, declining does not stop it, but a tracker-blocking extension or browser will.

One other thing runs whatever you choose: Vercel Web Analytics, which counts visits to this site. It sets no cookie and stores nothing in your browser, so the banner has nothing to switch off and declining does not stop it. Each page view records the page, the site that linked you here, your approximate location, and your browser, operating system and device type. To tell one visitor from another without a cookie, Vercel uses a hash computed from your request, and discards it after 24 hours. More in our privacy policy.

We store one thing regardless, and it is not a cookie: your answer to the banner is kept in your browser's local storage under the key nvq-consent, so we do not ask again on every page. It never leaves your browser and is not sent to us or to anyone else. Clearing your browser data removes it and the banner returns.

2What is set if you accept

Accepting turns on Google Ads conversion measurement, which tells us which advertisement brought someone to the site. It does not tell us who you are.

_gcl_au
Set by Google on this domain. Links a visit back to the ad that led to it. Lasts about 90 days.
_gcl_aw, _gcl_dc
Set by Google when you arrive from a Google ad, for the same purpose. Around 90 days.
IDE, test_cookie
Set by Google on doubleclick.net when the advertising tag is active. Used for conversion measurement and remarketing. Up to 13 months, and the test cookie only minutes.

These are Google's cookies, set under Google's terms. What Google does with the data is described in its own privacy and terms, and how it feeds into our decisions is in our privacy policy.

3What we deliberately do not run

Apart from the cookieless visitor count described in section 1, there is no Google Analytics on this site, no Meta pixel, no LinkedIn insight tag, no session recording, no heatmapping and no A/B testing tool. If that changes, this page changes first and the banner will ask you again.

Our typefaces are also served from this site rather than fetched from Google Fonts — they are bundled in at build time — so rendering a page needs no request to Google's font servers. That is true whatever you choose in the banner. It is a separate matter from the advertising tag described in section 1, which does contact Google.

4Changing your mind

Your choice is not final and reversing it costs nothing. Use the button below, or the "Cookie settings" link in the footer of any page.

Withdrawing consent stops any further cookies being set. Cookies already placed can be cleared through your browser's own settings, which every browser offers per site.
